2017 STEM FELLOWSHIP PARTICIPANTS | The Stockton NAACP Youth Council was selected to be a participant in the 2017 Alice Huffman STEM Fellows Program, sponsored by AT&T. The Stockton NAACP Youth Council partnered with the Stockton & Lincoln Unified School District. Workshop are held once a month during the summer at Sacramento State. The curriculum will help students gain a fuller understanding of the various STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Fields, career possibilities, and the concepts and importance of social justice. Each student participating in the STEM Program will receive a new laptop computer to utilize during the length of the program and will be able to keep after completing the program. The future of the economy is in STEM. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), employment related to STEM is expected to grow to 9 million by 2022. African-American students are underrepresented in STEM programs and courses of study compared to their overall college enrollment rate. In order to prepare the future of our youth of today, we must equip them with the knowledge and skills to reach for the promise of tomorrow. The NAACP Stockton Youth Council is working to expand opportunities for our youth in the STEM fields critical for growth in the 21st century economy. |
